NOTE: Updated on Jan. 22, 2019 to clarify vote.

At a public meeting Thursday, Jan. 17, the governing board for the East Valley Institute of Technology voted unanimously to place EVIT Superintendent Dr. Sally Downey on paid administrative leave and voted 7-2 to place principals Craig Pearson and Mark Yockus on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation. Board members Carolyn Crandell and Robert Covington voted against placing the principals on leave.

The board issued the following statement:

“In light of ongoing investigations and information that we have, the board feels this action is in the best interest of the school district in order to ensure full transparency with the offices of the auditor and attorney general. We also intend to begin an internal investigation to be conducted by the Gust Rosenfeld law firm.”

The board appointed Assistant Superintendent Dr. Chad Wilson to serve as Interim Superintendent overseeing the day to day operation of EVIT.

There will be no further statements from EVIT at this time regarding this investigation.
