We Hire EVIT: Feliz Care CentersEVIT Medical Assistant alumni Valeria Martinez and Jenny Ballesteros have taken the name of their employer – Feliz Care Centers – to heart: They couldn’t be more feliz to work at this Mesa primary care clinic where “happy” is part of its name.

“You get to see everything. You’d be surprised by what we see every day,” said Valeria, a certified medical assistant who works as the office manager for the Feliz Care Center at 1345 E. Main Street. Valeria eventually wants to go back to school to become a registered nurse. But for now, she said, “I’m happy here.”

Valeria, 22, and Jenny, 20, completed the Medical Assistant program at the EVIT East Campus, 6625 S. Power Road, in 2017. Their training included externships at pediatrics clinics and preparation to earn their medical assistant certification.

Angelina Canjura, a family nurse practitioner at Feliz Care Center, said EVIT prepared Valeria and Jenny well for their jobs at the clinic. “They’re awesome,” she said. “They’re on top of it.”

Medical Assistant is one of over 40 career training programs offered by EVIT at two central campuses in Mesa and branch campuses in Apache Junction and Fountain Hills. Training is tuition-free for East Valley high school students, who spend a half-day at their school and a half-day at EVIT. Adult students pay tuition, with financial aid available in many programs for those who qualify.

In the Medical Assistant program, students learn medical terminology, body systems, optometry, EKG, phlebotomy, CPR, safety standards and more. They also learn about office procedures such as billing, purchasing and filing insurance claims.

Every EVIT program is hands-on through labs, internships, apprenticeships and externships. Valeria and Jenny gained experience through externships at local pediatrics clinics. Both remember their first day at the clinics very well.

Their EVIT teachers “didn’t sugar-coat it” about what to expect at her externship, Jenny said, and it was indeed a bit nerve-wracking in the beginning. But then as she learned to communicate with patients and physicians, her confidence grew. Likewise, Valeria only needed to complete 100 hours at her externship, but ended up doubling her hours because she loved it so much.

Now at Feliz Care Center, both certified medical assistants love working directly with patients. As office manager, Valeria’s work day also includes referrals, verifying insurance coverage and more. Like Valeria, Jenny also wants to go back to school to eventually become a registered nurse or physician’s assistant. She would like to work in a hospital emergency room someday.
Since Valeria and Jenny completed the Medical Assistant program, the EVIT School of Health Sciences has partnered with Pima Medical Institute. Now in several EVIT programs – Medical Assistant, Nursing Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, Veterinary Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, and Physical Therapy Technician – students can earn credit toward a degree at PMI while attending EVIT.

Students often say they enrolled in EVIT’s health programs so they can get a job and work in the health-care industry while going to college.

Jenny and Valeria recommend EVIT to other East Valley students. “Give it a try,” Valeria said. “You don’t lose anything, and there are so many options.”
