Superintendent's Update - November 2020

EVIT Superintendent Update

EVIT Power Campus
The East Valley Institute of Technology’s East Campus, 6625 S. Power Road in southeast Mesa, has a new name: EVIT Power Campus. In October, the Governing Board decided to rename the campus, which is located in Mesa’s Power Knowledge Corridor. An approximate $38 million expansion project is under way to accommodate the campus’ booming enrollment in aviation, engineering, cosmetology, health-care and veterinary programs. The Power Campus expansion is expected to be completed in the 2021-22 school year.

New board member
Maricopa County School Superintendent Steve Watson recently swore in Jeff Fleetham to fill the District 1 seat on the EVIT Governing Board. The seat became vacant when Bryghtyn Franker resigned. Mr. Fleetham is director of the Arizona Registrar of Contractors, a position he was appointed to by Gov. Doug Ducey in 2015, and also serves on the advisory council for EVIT’s Construction Technologies program. He also serves on numerous councils and boards including the Governor’s Workforce Arizona Council and the Greater Phoenix Chamber Foundation’s Construction Workforce Collaborative. Welcome, Mr. Fleetham!

Annual Thanksgiving bake sale
The Culinary School @ EVIT has started taking orders for its annual Thanksgiving Bake Sale. Unlike last year, the baking and culinary arts programs will be taking pre-orders to help keep student/customer interaction to a minimum during the pandemic. Faculty would prefer orders to be placed and paid for online at http://evit-culinary-bakery.square.site/. But orders can also be placed by calling Chef Scott Meyer at (480) 461-4132 and leaving a message or by emailing [email protected]. Customers will pick up their orders between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Nov. 23-24.

Taylor’s story
EVIT is a big commitment for high school students, but Taylor Smith is glad she worked it into her schedule. Taylor completed the Emergency Medical Technician program in 2019 while attending Tempe Union’s Desert Vista High School, earned her EMT license and other certifications, and is working in the health-care industry while attending the University of Arizona as a pre-med major. Her ultimate goal is to become a cardiothoracic surgeon with Doctors Without Borders. “I want to be a doctor that makes a difference,” she said. Read Taylor’s story: https://bit.ly/evitsmithstory

We are thankful
As this is the month to count our many blessings, the East Valley Institute of Technology would like to thank all those who support our school and our mission to change lives by loving our students and serving our community. The work we do would not be possible without the involvement of our parents, elected leaders, sending high schools, and business community. Thank you – and Happy Thanksgiving!
