Superintendent's Update - February 2021

EVIT Superintendent Update

Parents’ school of choice
We knew the 2020-21 school year would challenge EVIT and all schools in unprecedented ways. But we never imagined how supportive the parents of EVIT students would be as we worked through establishing safety protocols and making sure we could stay open all year for in-person learning. Our annual parent survey shows overwhelming support for EVIT’s efforts this year:  95% gave EVIT an ‘A’ or ‘B’ for how well we have handled COVID-19, and 97% graded their family’s experience with EVIT this year as an ‘A’ or ‘B.’ In addition, 99% of EVIT parents said they are likely or very likely to recommend EVIT to other families. Thank you, EVIT parents!

A helping hand
Students in EVIT’s Interior Design program recently completed an interior renovation of a boutique at Mesa’s Jefferson Elementary School, where families in need can get clothing and other goods and supplies. This project, which was started last year under the leadership of Marlo Loria, director of CTE & Innovative Partnerships for Mesa Public Schools, and Kim Foulger, EVIT Interior Design instructor, gave students the opportunity to not only do good work using their design skills but to also do good for their community.

Construction donation
McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., S+H Steel and Stone Cold Masonry recently donated $2,500 in tools to EVIT’s Construction Technologies program. Instructor Curtis Ruhl and the students are grateful to have this equipment to help prepare them for jobs in one of Arizona’s most in-demand industries.

Enrollment for 2021-22
Online applications are being accepted for the 2021-22 school year at www.evit.com/enroll. Counselors in East Valley high schools have been terrific this year in working with EVIT recruiters to help students learn about EVIT programs when COVID restrictions have prevented recruiters from having direct access to schools. We appreciate their help.

Stephanie’s story
Sometimes it takes a few years before students are employed in the industry they trained for at EVIT. But that doesn’t mean they haven’t been successful. Stephanie Reyes completed EVIT’s Dental Assistant program and graduated from Mesa’s Mountain View High School in 2016. She then went on to earn her degree in biomedical science at Northern Arizona University while using her EVIT training to volunteer in community dental clinics and build up her application for dental school. Last fall, she was accepted to Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston and is on her way to becoming a dentist. Read Stephanie’s story: https://bit.ly/3trMsQR
