Arizona high school students have a wide range of electives to choose from in addition to their academic requirements. But did you know that students who live in the East Valley also have options outside of their high school to jump-start their path toward a rewarding career?
Through the East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT), high school students have access to over 40 advanced career training programs at EVIT’s two central campuses in Mesa and a branch campus at Apache Junction High School. And it’s all tuition-free. East Valley school districts even provide transportation to and from EVIT campuses.

Main Street, is the program for you. Are you interested in working in the health-care industry? EVIT offers a wide range of nursing and health technician programs at both campuses.

“EVIT is a great opportunity for high school students to get a head-start on a real career path,” said Superintendent Dr. Chad Wilson. “EVIT programs are much more than a 50-minute elective. Our students receive two and a half to four hours a day of training that includes hands-on experience and preparation to earn an industry credential. Students who complete EVIT programs are prepared to enter the workforce right out of high school or to go on to college if that’s what they desire.”
Most EVIT programs also offer opportunities to earn college credit through dual enrollment with area community colleges and partnerships with other postsecondary institutions such as Pima Medical Institute. Also, starting in 2023-24, EVIT will begin offering associate degrees in certain programs.
Taylor Smith completed EVIT’s Emergency Medical Technician program in 2019 while she was still in high school. “It gave me the opportunity to fully utilize the time we have in high school to achieve my EMT license,” she said. “Also, certain EVIT courses offer college credit from local community colleges, which is very beneficial. Dual enrollment credits save you time and so much money in college.”
In addition to earning her EMT license while at EVIT, Smith was also certified in basic life support and in adult and pediatric automated external defibrillator, CPR and first aid. She went on to study neuroscience and cognitive sciences at the University of Arizona while using the skills she learned at EVIT to work as an ophthalmic technician and medical scribe.
At EVIT, students are taught by industry professionals and learn alongside classmates who share their passion for a particular career. Students often say this is one of the things they love most about EVIT: For half a school day, they are in a school with students who, like them, want to be there and have chosen to commit their time in pursuit of a career.
Students who complete EVIT programs have a 98% high school graduation rate, two out of three go on to college and 94% are in jobs related to their training, college or the military within a year of finishing their program.
In 2022, 95% of students said they would recommend EVIT to a friend and 98% of parents said they would recommend EVIT to other families.
“We say all the time that EVIT changes lives,” Wilson said. “But that’s more than talk. We walk our mission every day to produce real change and make our students successful.”

- EVIT high school programs are half-day for juniors and seniors. Students should plan ahead and take required classes for graduation early in order to have room in their schedules for EVIT.

- Enroll at www.evit.com/enrollnow. EVIT started accepting high school applications on Nov. 1 for the 2023-24 school year. Adult applications are accepted throughout the year as programs are offered.

- Parents/legal guardians of new students will need an active email account to access and use the online registration system

- Upload attendance record, discipline record, current unofficial transcripts and proof of immunizations
- Admissions office will inform students via email once application is approved or if additional information is needed
