Cosmetology students at the East Valley Institute of Technology will show off their creative skills through elaborate hairstyles, costumes and displays at two hair shows in December.

The Masquerade Hair Show at the Main Campus, 1601 W. Main St., Mesa, is 4-6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, and will feature a carnival theme. The Annual Fantasy Hair Show will feature a night of imagination from 4-6 p.m., Friday, Dec. 9 at the Power Campus, 6625 S. Power Road, Mesa. Tickets at each show are $5 (cash only) per person with children 5 and younger free.

“We are excited about this for a few reasons, the main reason being that our students will get to show the skills they have learned,” said Main Campus cosmetology instructor Roger Martin. “This helps them experience teamwork and manage a project from beginning to end. It introduces them to critical thinking and problem solving, and dealing with a timeline and deadlines. They all have an opportunity to contribute and they all get an opportunity to lead.”

Guests will walk through the cosmetology buildings at Main and Power campuses where student models with hairstyles related to the theme will be posed in creative displays.

Power Campus instructor Sarah Liu said the students start prepping for the show in October. Second-year students choose an avant-garde fantasy theme and are assigned a first-year student to model the look. First-year students who are not models create a look from a chosen decade.

“All students are involved to make this show amazing,” Liu said. “They work on backdrops, costumes, hairstyles and makeup styles.”

Martin said the second-year cosmetology students at the Main Campus are working hard to “up their game” from what they did last year as first-year students.

“It’s fun because each year the students want to do better than the previous year’s students, especially our second-year students,” he said. “And our first-year students are eager to express their artistry. This is where our students get to show their creativity and talents to the public.”

While the hair shows are fun for the students to produce, they are also an opportunity to learn important skills the students will need when they complete their EVIT training and seek employment in the beauty industry.

“Our industry is creative and requires a lot of teamwork. This allows students to work as teams to put on a show,” Liu said. “It allows parents and family to come and see what their students have been working on and it builds our community. It gives the students a chance to show off their creative side with something exciting and different.”
