Hello, EVIT parents! This is the sixth in a series of newsletters to give you more information about the East Valley Institute of Technology and how your son or daughter can get the most out of their career and technical education. But did you know EVIT offers career training opportunities for you too? Today’s topic: Adult Education for EVIT parents.

Adults-only career training

The East Valley Institute of Technology has something for nearly the whole family. In addition to our high school programs, we offer 12 programs accredited by the Council on Occupational Education that are exclusively for adults. Each link below provides a description of the program, length, schedule and financial aid opportunities:

EVIT also offers high school programs in many of these areas, but the COE-accredited programs are adult-only.

Enrollment is currently under way in these programs for East Valley and Phoenix-area adults who want to train for a new career or upgrade their skills in the industry they currently work in. All programs are offered at the 65-acre EVIT Main Campus, conveniently located on the Valley Metro Light Rail line at 1601 W. Main Street near downtown Mesa.

In addition to career training, EVIT Adult Education also provides counseling and career guidance services and employment services, including job search, resume and portfolio training, and interviewing skills. Veterans Administration benefits are accepted and financial aid is available in some programs for those who qualify. The EVIT Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, may also provide financial assistance to low-income adults who need help paying tuition and program fees.

High School Equivalency Prep

Would you or another adult in your family like to get your diploma? EVIT Adult Education can help through our High School Equivalency Prep program. This class prepares participants for the Arizona state GED exam by offering an exploration of the five test subjects with focus on the development of reading, writing and math skills. Students also learn test-taking strategies.

Tuition is $100. There is an estimated out-of-pocket expense of $287 based on book, calculator, exam fee, and if the student is 22 or older, the cost of obtaining a fingerprint clearance card. Applicants must be at least 16 and not enrolled in school. They must also be available to attend in-person classes at the EVIT Main Campus. For more information, call (480) 461-4013.

Connor’s story

EVIT alum Connor Boucher loves working on big Caterpillar scrapers and other heavy machinery at Rummel Construction Inc. But he wouldn’t have completed his career training in EVIT’s Diesel Technologies program or land his dream job without a state-funded CTED Completer Grant. Over the past three years, CTED Completer Grants have allowed nearly 500 EVIT students to complete their career training in the year after they graduate from high school. Best of Mesa

Readers of the East Valley Tribune have voted the EVIT as the Best Public School in Mesa! In the newspaper’s annual Best of Mesa competition, readers also voted EVIT as Best Place to Work, EVIT Superintendent Dr. Chad Wilson as Best Education Leader, and EVIT Graphic/Web Design instructor Eric Perez as Best High School Teacher. EVIT instructors swept the high school teacher category with Medical Careers instructor Tammy Powers placing second, Early Childhood Education instructor Paula Corbin placing third, and Radio/Audio Production instructor Dave Juday earning Honorable Mention. We would like to thank all of the parents and students who voted for EVIT!

Enrollment for 2021-22

We are enrolling for next school year – and programs are quickly filling up! If your son or daughter plans to return to EVIT next year, they should have taken a brief survey in class and that will be all they need to do to re-enroll. EVIT will send their information to their high school for scheduling purposes, and no other paperwork or documentation will be needed.

If you know of other families with students who would thrive by choosing EVIT, we hope you will share with them that we are now enrolling. Please encourage them to visit www.evit.com/enroll.
