Hello, EVIT parents! This is the fifth in a series of newsletters to give you more information about the East Valley Institute of Technology and how your family can get the most out of career and technical education. Today’s topic: Time to enroll.

It seems like the 2021-22 school year just started, but already we are enrolling for 2022-23. Our online application portal for high school programs opened on Nov. 1 – and in the past couple weeks, we have received over 700 applications. Some of our programs, such as Cosmetology, Automotive Technologies and Veterinary Assistant tend to fill up fast, so here are some frequently asked questions and tips to make sure your son or daughter gets in to the program they want.

Q:  My student already attends EVIT and wants to continue in their program. What do they need to do to enroll for next year?

A:  Students who are enrolling in the next year of their program, will sign up in their class at EVIT. There is no need to submit a new application.

Q:  My student attends EVIT now, but wants to switch to a different program next year. Do they need to reapply?

A:  Current students who want to switch to a different program next year will make that request in their current class at EVIT and a counselor will follow up with them.

Q:  My student is a senior at EVIT this year, but won’t be finished with their training in May. Can they come back to finish next year?

A:  Yes. For the past several years, the Legislature has funded CTED Completer Grants, which allow students who have graduated from high school to return to EVIT the next school year to complete their program. Even though these students are considered adults, they pay no tuition because the state funds them for another year so they can finish their training. We won’t know until the spring if the state will fund CTED Completer Grants again, but if your student is interested in applying, they should contact [email protected].

Q:  My student is finishing their program this year, but is interested in coming back as an adult student next year. What programs are available for adults?

A:  Adults are welcome to apply to enroll in any of EVIT’s high school programs if space is available. EVIT offers over 40 high school career training programs. Go to this link to see the list: https://evit.com/high_school_career_training/hs.

High school graduates can also apply to one of EVIT’s post-secondary programs: Aesthetics, Collision Repair, Cosmetology, George Brazil Plumbing Service & Repair Technician, Emergency Medical Technician, Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR), Massage Therapy, Nursing Assistant, Practical Nurse, Sterile Processing Technician, Surgical Technology and Welding. Q:  Are adult programs tuition-free like the high school programs?

A:  No. Adult students – with the exception of high school graduates attending EVIT on CTED Completer Grants as mentioned above – pay tuition. The cost varies by program. View the Adult Education Program Catalog for more information:  https://bit.ly/3DoKh5d

Q:  Is financial aid available for adult students?

A:  It depends on the program they enroll in. There is no financial aid for adults who take high school programs, but EVIT will work with students to set up affordable payment plans. Financial aid and Veterans Administration benefits are accepted for some of EVIT’s post-secondary programs for adults who qualify. Q:  I have other children who may want to attend EVIT. Where can they get more information and start the process to enroll?

A:  To request more information about EVIT programs, go to this link: www.evit.com/requestinfo. To speak with an EVIT recruiter, call (480) 461-4000. Students should also reach out to their counselor at their high school for more information about EVIT. If they are ready to enroll now, they can start the process at: www.evit.com/enroll.

New programs

The EVIT Main Campus, 1601 W. Main Street in Mesa, is offering a new program for high school students, Electrical & Power Transmission Installation. This specialized career in the construction industry involves installing indoor and outdoor residential, commercial and industrial electrical systems and associated power transmission lines.

EVIT also is expanding three of its high school programs to the EVIT Power Campus, 6625 S. Power Road in Mesa, to meet the needs of the growing southeast Valley. Aesthetics, Criminal Justice and Welding – previously offered only at the EVIT Main Campus – will also be offered at the Power Campus in August 2022. So if you reside in the southeast Valley and your son or daughter is interested in those programs, they now have the option to take them at a campus closer to home.

Events for parents

EVIT will host a second Family Fun Night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Dec. 15 at the Creamistry, 335 N. Gilbert Road in Gilbert. Mention EVIT and the restaurant will donate 15% to EVIT.
