Hello, EVIT parents! This is the second in a series of newsletters to give you more information about the East Valley Institute of Technology and how your family can get the most out of career and technical education. Today’s topic: College credit.

EVIT is a great option for students who want an alternative to college. But did you know EVIT also is a great choice for students who are going to college? In fact, 2 out of 3 EVIT students go on to post-secondary education, many of them using their EVIT training to get a job and work in the industry in which they are studying while they are in college. And in many programs, students can start earning college credits while they are at EVIT.

Dual enrollment

Like many high schools, some EVIT programs offer classes that count for college credit at community colleges through dual enrollment. This gives students a jump-start on their college education. For example, students in EVIT’s 3D Animation program can earn up to 12 college credits and Fire Science students can earn up to 18 college credits through Mesa Community College, while students in Aviation can earn up to 17 credits from Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Those are just a few examples. Some EVIT programs also have dual enrollment through Scottsdale Community College. The cost of $85 per credit hour is the standard community college rate. To find out if your child’s program has dual enrollment, please contact counselor David Pullman at the Power Campus at [email protected] or counselor Jake Hansen at the Main Campus at [email protected]

DEADLINES COMING UP!
Deadlines to sign up for dual enrollment are coming up quickly, so please check with your student’s counselor today to see if dual enrollment is available for their program and when they need to sign up.

College credit by examination

EVIT also has articulation agreements with colleges that will give EVIT students college credit by exam. These include:

  • Central Arizona College – Upon completion of the EVIT Nursing Assistant program and meeting other requirements, students are eligible for credit by exam. For more information, contact David Pullman at the Power Campus at [email protected] or counselor Joyce Eagar-Lemons at the Main Campus at [email protected]

  • Eastern Arizona Community College – Once an EVIT Cosmetology student completes the required clock hours and receives a license, EAC will accept 32 transfer credits toward obtaining a two-year degree. For more information, contact counselor Cassi Perez at the Power Campus at [email protected] or counselor Lori Rich at the Main Campus at [email protected]

  • Pima Community College – Once students in EVIT’s Construction, HVAC, Plumbing or Welding programs complete the NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) certifications in their subject area, they become eligible for credit by exam through PCC. For more information, contact Jake Hansen at the Main Campus at [email protected]

  • Paradise Valley Community College – After students complete the EVIT Emergency Medical Technician program and pass the NREMT (National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians) exam, they are eligible to earn credit by exam through PVCC. For more information, contact Joyce Eagar-Lemons at the Main Campus at [email protected].

More opportunities for college credit

These options take students even further toward a college degree:

  • Cosmetology and Aesthetics – With a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA), EVIT Cosmetology and Aesthetics students can receive up to 31 credits AT NO COST toward a Beauty & Wellness AAS degree at Mesa Community College. MCC awards PLA credit for cosmetologist, hairstylist and aesthetician licenses. To access and complete the PLA, students must enroll at MCC and have an MCC ID. The MCC credits are transferable to Arizona State University toward an undergraduate degree. For more information, contact Lori Rich at the Main Campus at [email protected] or Cassi Perez at the Power Campus at [email protected]

  • Hospitality, Culinary and Baking – Through Scottsdale Community College, EVIT Hospitality Management students can earn nine credits of dual enrollment that puts them on the pathway to earning a degree from SCC and going on to Northern Arizona University for an undergraduate degree in hospitality. Also, EVIT Culinary Arts and Commercial Baking & Pastry Arts students have the opportunity to earn up to 21 dual enrollment college credits through SCC; once they complete 16 credits, they earn an SCC Certificate. For more information, contact Lori Rich at the Main Campus at [email protected].

  • Early Childhood Education – EVIT has partnered with Mesa Community College to offer EVIT students the college’s Certificate of Completion in Foundations of Early Childhood Education. The 19-credit certificate is taught by EVIT Early Childhood Education instructor Paula Corbin and offered through dual enrollment and concurrent enrollment at MCC. In addition, through the Professional Career Pathways Scholarship Program, funding pays for the students’ college tuition, fees and textbooks. The MCC certificate can also be used toward earning MCC’s Associate of Applied Science degree in Early Childhood Education. For more information, contact Lori Rich at [email protected].

  • Health Careers at PMIPima Medical Institute offers a dual/early enrollment program leading to an associate degree for students in EVIT’s Emergency Medical Technician, Medical Assistant, Nursing Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, Physical Therapy Technician and Veterinary Assistant programs. For more information, contact PMI coordinator Lorena Marmolejo-Reyna at [email protected] or PMI coordinator Alli Rosas at [email protected]
