EVIT News Parents Can Use - Jan. 2022

Hello, EVIT parents! This is the sixth in a series of newsletters to give you more information about the East Valley Institute of Technology and how your family can get the most out of career and technical education. Today’s topic: Jobs, jobs, jobs.

Can you believe we only have about four months left in this school year? Before we know it, our seniors will be graduating from high school and completing their EVIT training. But where do they go from here? Whether their goal is to go on to college or to enter the workforce right away, we want all of our students to have the opportunity to land a job.

Hire EVIT Job Board

At hireevit.evit.com, EVIT students can sign up as job seekers in a safe and secure way. After your student creates their free account and uploads their resume, they will be able to see job openings at local companies who are looking for EVIT students they can hire. Currently, 34 companies have job ads posted on the Hire EVIT Job Board, including Hospice of the Valley, First Credit Union, MGC Contractors, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, US Army, and What’s Crackin Café, among others.  Students can browse jobs by companies, locations and categories.

If you own a business and would like to post a job opening on the Hire EVIT Job Board, just go to hireevit.evit.com and sign up as an employer. If you have questions or need assistance with the job board, email [email protected].

Internships

The spring semester is when many of our students are out working in an internship at auto dealerships, medical practices, vet clinics and much more. If your student has an internship this semester, encourage them to do their best work. A great internship experience could lead to an offer for part- or full-time employment. If your student wants to continue working where they are interning, encourage them to speak up and ask the employer about future job possibilities.

EVIT Career Fair

We will be hosting career fairs from 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., Feb. 9 at the EVIT Power Campus, 6625 S. Power Road, Mesa, and from 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., Feb. 11 at the EVIT Main Campus, 1601 W. Main St., Mesa. Businesses from all over the Valley and Arizona will have tables at the career fairs, where students can learn more about the company and the careers it offers. In the past, some employers have even done impromptu job interviews at the EVIT Career Fair. So please encourage your student to attend.

Other job resources

Most EVIT instructors used to work in the industry they are now teaching about, and many still have contacts and representatives of that industry who serve on their program’s advisory council. So if your student wants to start working after they complete their training, they should talk to their teacher for helpful tips and possible connections.

EVIT students can also connect with our Placement Coordinator, Jake Hansen at [email protected] or 480-461-4161 for assistance with resumes and job leads.

EVIT Expo

All parents of current students are invited and encouraged to attend this year’s EVIT Expo, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 29 at the EVIT Main Campus, 1601 W. Main St., Mesa. EVIT Expo is a great time to see what your student’s program has been doing and the skills the students are learning. All instructors will be available to answer questions, including teachers from the EVIT Power Campus.  There will be a wide range of activities to enjoy, from cupcake decorating in the Commercial Baking & Pastry Arts program to skill competitions in the Welding program. The Aviation program will be bringing flight simulators and the Veterinary Assistant program will have many pets and animals on display. In addition, we will have food trucks, music provided by 88.7FM The Pulse, and trolley tours of the 65-acre Main Campus, including drive-through tours of the auto bays in our Automotive and Collision Repair programs.

Associate degrees

We would like to let all parents know that EVIT and the other Career Technical Education Districts in Arizona are pursuing legislation that would allow us to offer associate degrees in high-demand fields. Read more about House Bill 2034 at this link: https://www.azleg.gov/legtext/55leg/2R/bills/HB2034P.htm

If you would like to see EVIT be able to offer associate degrees, please let your elected legislators know.
