Two months to go
It’s hard to believe there are just two months left in the 2018-19 school year. April and May promise to be jam-packed as usual with EVIT students participating in state competitions, testing for industry certifications, receiving job offers, and getting ready for our huge EVIT Completion Ceremony on May 20 at Tempe Diablo Stadium. Thank you to all who have worked with EVIT to change lives this year. We appreciate your support!
Congrats, Pat!
One of EVIT’s most generous supporters, Pat Langlin-Brazil, was recently honored by ASU Gammage with the Jerry Award for her outstanding support of connecting communities with the arts. Pat, the co-owner of George Brazil Plumbing and Electrical, has served on the ASU Gammage 50th anniversary leadership board and sponsored many programs. She also started the George Brazil Plumbing School at EVIT and serves on the EVIT Foundation Board, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides financial assistance to low-income EVIT students.
Presidential nominee
Emily Hakes is the first EVIT student to ever be slated for president of Arizona HOSA Future Health Professionals. Emily is a straight “A” student in EVIT’s Medical Assistant program and a senior at Mesa’s Mountain View High School. She will find out later this month if she’s been voted in. Good luck, Emily!
Giving back
We are very proud of seven EVIT HOSA students who have medaled and won Barbara James Service and Presidential Awards based on the number of volunteer hours they have put into the health-care field since July. They include: Katherine Hernandez (Dobson High), Gold (265 hours); Maria Anaya (Tempe High), Bronze (129 hours); Paloma Morales Meneses (Red Mountain High), Bronze (109 hours), Abdullah Madi (Dobson), Bronze (106 hours); Vanessa Gonzalez (Sequoia charter), Bronze (103 hours); Elijah Bedonie (Corona del Sol High), Bronze (102.8 hours); and Itzel Murilla (Arcadia High), Bronze (100 hours).
Educators Rising
EVIT’s Early Childhood Education program had a great showing at the recent Educators Rising state competition. Alexa Negrete (Chaparral High) won 1st place for Creative Lecture, a $10,000 scholarship to Grand Canyon University, and is a national contender. Brianna Bailey (Eduprize charter) won 1st place for Early Childhood Education and a $28,000 scholarship to Northern Arizona University.
Best of Mesa
Readers of the East Valley Tribune voted EVIT as the Best Place to Work in the newspaper’s 2019 Best of Mesa contest. Tammy Powers, Human Anatomy & Physiology for Medical Careers instructor, placed 3rd in the Best High School Teacher category. Congratulations to Mesa’s Red Mountain High School, for being voted Best Public School.
