More dollars to the classroom

EVIT has been striving for the past year to lower administrative expense and put more tax dollars in the classroom. In the 2019-20 school year, approximately 19 percent of EVIT’s budget was spent on administration, Superintendent Dr. Chad Wilson told the EVIT Governing Board at its meeting Monday night. This school year, that was lowered to 11 percent as EVIT cut administrative positions and spending and hired additional counselors, instructional specialists and recruiters to support students and teachers. Currently, EVIT is spending about 10 percent on administration, but Dr. Wilson told the governing board he would like to get that to below 10 percent. “We’re working really hard to be good stewards of tax dollars,” he said.

Teen crisis pilot

EVIT is one of 35 schools nationwide and the first in Arizona to participate in the Teen Mental Health First Aid pilot program to train high school students in how to assist their friends when a mental health challenge or crisis occurs. The course, which is being offered to EVIT’s health-care students in partnership with Crisis Response Network, specifically teaches the important step of involving a responsible and trusted adult. As part of the program, several EVIT faculty have become specially certified to be an on-campus resource for the students.

CTED redistricting

The EVIT Career Technical Education District held its third public redistricting open house Monday, Feb. 10. EVIT is in the process of redrawing boundaries for governing board seats due to the addition of Cave Creek Unified School District to the CTED. A second round of open house meetings in March will display proposed maps for public comment, with the final map expected to be adopted by the governing board in April. A helping hand

Students in EVIT’s Interior Design, Fashion Design & Construction programs are getting ready to remodel the clothing donation center at Jefferson Elementary School in Mesa. Volunteers from Love of Christ Lutheran Church and Jefferson staff recently cleaned up the Jag Boutique so that the remodel can begin. This project is being spearheaded by Marlo Loria, executive director of innovative partnerships for Mesa Public Schools, and Kim Foulger, EVIT interior design instructor.

Thank you, parents & students!

In a recent survey of 561 EVIT parents and 1,960 EVIT students, 95 percent of parents said they would recommend EVIT to other families and 96 percent of students said they would recommend EVIT to a friend. We appreciate the support of our families and will continue to find ways to enhance and improve their EVIT experience as we change lives by loving our students and serving our community.
