Steve Bernasek, Diesel Technologies teacher and team lead for automotive programs at the East Valley Institute of Technology, has been named the 2021 ASE Education Foundation Byrl Shoemaker Instructor of the Year.

Bernasek will be honored at the ASE Annual Board of Governors meeting in November in Scottsdale.

“Instructors are the axle upon which all automotive education turns, and we look forward to recognizing you as a great example to everyone in the service industry as well as your peers in education,” foundation president Mike Coley said in a letter to Bernasek.

Bernasek has taught Diesel Technologies at EVIT since 2016. He also now serves as the team lead over the Diesel, Automotive Technologies and Collision Repair programs.

“I never thought I would be that instructor with the title of Instructor of the Year,” Bernasek said. “This award has definitely motivated me more to make the EVIT automotive programs strive further.”

EVIT’s automotive programs have a history of success. In 2015, retired Automotive Technologies teacher Randy Baker won the national title of Byrl Shoemaker Instructor of the Year.
